Waterdown Neighbourhoods

The sign reads, "Welcome to Hamilton. A City of Many Communities". Waterdown, along with other surrounding municipalities, amalgamated into the new City of Hamilton in 2001. Another sign, closer to the original settlement greets travellers. "Welcome to Waterdown Village".

The Victorian Village was first incorporated in 1878. Nestled at the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, in East Flamborough Township, the hamlet bustled with activity in its early years. A convenient stop between Dundas and York (Toronto), travellers frequently rested at the American Hotel (c.1824). Today, you can still enjoy a meal and a pint in the American - the original facade and street side section having changed little since its construction.

Waterdown was an important milling community. The fast moving Grindstone Creek originating atop the escarpment provided all the necessary waterpower. Growth and commerce thrived and with the arrival of the railroad and station stop in 1912, the Village was set to prosper and become the popular place to live and do business that it is today.

Ideally located, modern Waterdown enjoys easy access to all major transportation routes in and around the GTA and Golden Horseshoe. Residents enjoy trails, green spaces, nearby natural wonders, a variety of housing options and extensive shopping opportunities.

Waterdown is undergoing an explosion of growth; appealing to families, retirees, empty nesters, first time home buyers and investors, all seeking a combination of today’s amenities within a small, self-contained village atmosphere.

Dundas Street runs the entire length of Waterdown. Hamilton Street, a major cross street, serves as the division between East and West on the MLS® System; however, the Central Core bears its own special mention. The site of the original settlement, tree-lined streets showcase stately Victorian homes and historic cottages on spacious properties. The Core is a charming enclave appealing to those who enjoy the village atmosphere of a bygone era and the convenience of walkably close quaint boutiques, restaurants and historical landmarks.

The Mill Street Heritage District is history on display. For those who prefer and appreciate the building techniques and design elements of centuries old homes, the Mill Street district is the area of choice. Behind the original facades, homes have been carefully outfitted with the latest comforts and standards. Many of the boutiques, shops, restaurants and cafes are themselves housed in designated properties of historic interest.

All Waterdown residents, and those from communities beyond, enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the Downtown Core. Pass a lovely afternoon strolling the streets admiring various architectural styles, or explore antique shops for one of a kind treasures. Savour a great meal and beverage on the patio of a restaurant or pub. Have coffee and croissants in a cafe while watching the bustle of the street. Explore unique retail establishments. In other words, bask in all of the ambiance of a still thriving village.
