Cootes Paradise is a neighbourhood worthy of being called “Paradise.” Historic, late 1800’s to early 1900’s, mostly two storey homes are found in the area between Victoria and King Streets, east of Sydenham. Many of these have been extensively renovated, but they lack a garage. The modest one and a half storey war time houses, and the mid-century bungalow and split level standards are scattered throughout the community to the west of Sydenham. The subdivision in the Cascades Park area consists of two storey homes built in the early 2000’s. Semi’s, towns, and contemporary infill properties are available, and the former high school has been converted into the upscale Dundas District Lofts condominium suites.
The neighbourhood is surrounded by conservation lands with hiking trails, waterfalls and sanctuaries. The Dundas Driving Park with softball fields, a bandshell, playground, wading pool with spray pad, picnic areas and an outdoor ice rink in winter is very popular. It’s also the spot to gather for the annual fireworks display. Olympic Sports Park has several soccer fields, a softball diamond and arena for ice skating. The always busy lookout on Sydenham Road provides spectacular views of Hamilton in every season.
The boutiques, restaurants, pubs and retail establishments of the Dundas Downtown commercial district hold a fascination unlike any other. Something is always taking place: film shoots, antique car shows, festivals, and neighbours strolling about enjoying summertime patios or admiring festive holiday shop windows. Nearby professional services and shopping plazas take care of the daily essentials.
Tree canopied streets of the historic district showcase Victorian homes, stately church buildings, and points of interest. The downtown centre provides a treasure trove of entertainment and shopping adventure. Stop in for a flight menu at the Shawn & Ed Brewing Company or explore the history of the town at the Dundas Museum and Archives. Cootes Paradise residents agree – their walkable neighbourhood has everything.
