University. Gardens. Those two words together accurately sum up the neighbourhood. Close to McMaster University, many of the homes are situated on beautiful ravine lots. Mature trees line the streets and carefully tended yards are kept manicured and landscaped.
Young and mature families, empty nesters, and downsizers share this small but vibrant community bordering on West Hamilton.
University Gardens is a neighbourhood brimming with character. Home ownership possibilities consist largely of 1950’s era bungalows, followed closely by split levels. Perhaps newly built in mid-century, very little of the original home is likely to exist today. Extensive remodeling has created cozy family homes with stylish and functional kitchens and baths, hardwood floors, and open concept layouts. Those that have not been updated are quickly purchased by renovators/contractors or young families not afraid to take on a project. To a lesser degree, two-story detached, townhouses and custom built homes are found along the cul de sacs, drives, and avenues of the community.
In conjunction with nearby conservation lands, University Gardens has abundant trails. The Cootes Drive Trail is a multi-use asphalt trail while the Spencer Creek Trail is a natural footpath. The abandoned H&D Rail Line Trail is now a pleasant walk along its pathway and parkland.
University Plaza will in all probability meet daily shopping requirements and errands. For weekly grocery trips, the Metro Dundas Valley serves the community and much of Dundas.
University Gardens is primarily a residential area with recreational pursuits and necessities close at hand. The neighbourhood is attractive to those wishing to downsize into a comfortable home with a yard and garden. Families can find compact, but affordable properties. Dwellings that have been outfitted with the latest in materials and aesthetics create the utmost in modern convenience while maintaining the character of a bygone, and perhaps, nostalgic era.
A little trivia – McMaster’s official school colours of maroon and grey were adopted in 1912.
